About
Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Greenville, Pennsylvania, built on a simple but powerful idea: connecting the hunting tradition with hunger relief. Since 1991, the organization has coordinated the donation of hunter-harvested deer, covering the cost of processing and distributing lean, high-protein ground venison free of charge to food pantries, shelters, missions, and community assistance programs across the Commonwealth.
The program works through a network of approved meat processors, volunteer county coordinators, and food bank partners. Hunters bring their extra deer to a participating processor, HSH covers the butchering costs, and the finished venison is distributed to charitable food programs that serve low-income individuals and families. Every $25 donated to HSH provides as many as 100 servings, and a single average-sized deer yields enough meat for roughly 200 meals.
Over more than three decades, HSH has provided over 3 million pounds of donated venison to food assistance agencies statewide. During the 2024-25 season alone, hunters contributed nearly 284,000 pounds. With more than 1.6 million Pennsylvanians classified as food insecure, the need continues to grow, and HSH remains one of the most direct and effective ways for hunters and their communities to make a tangible difference.
HSH is funded through a mix of corporate sponsors, individual donations from hunters and community members, and public support. Recognized as a national model that other states have replicated, the organization operates under a guiding philosophy it calls "Hunting as Social Service."
