Lawn care service... worth it or do it yourself?

Mowing is getting old. Between work and weekends I'm starting to think about just paying someone. Curious what people pay around here for a regular cut and trim. Quarter acre lot, nothing fancy.

Also if anybody has a name worth recommending I'll take it. Last guy I tried showed up twice and ghosted.

We finally caved a few years back and it was honestly worth every penny. My husband used to lose half his Saturday to it and now it's done in 20 minutes while we're at lunch.

What we pay isn't the cheapest in town but he's reliable and that's what matters. The cheapest guys in our experience have been the ones who don't show up. You get what you pay for unfortunately.

We did it ourselves for years and then last spring my husband threw his back out trying to get the mower out of the shed and that pretty much ended the debate at our house. We hired a small local guy and honestly it's been so nice to come home Friday afternoon and the yard is just done. If you go that route my only advice is get someone who is actually local, not the bigger companies, the personal touch is worth it.

We finally caved and hired someone last year and my husband admits it was the right call. He'd been fighting that yard for 40 years. The trick is finding someone reliable who shows up when they say. The first one we tried would skip weeks with no warning. The second one has been wonderful. Word of mouth is the only way to find the good ones.
