That reassessment number can't be right

Got my reassessment notice and the number on it can't be right... they have my place at almost double what we paid for it eight years ago and we haven't done anything fancy to it since. Anyone else's come back way off? I keep hearing about the informal review process but I don't know if it's worth the trouble or if it just changes a few hundred bucks at the end of the day.

Curious what other people are seeing.

You are not alone! Ours went up almost 80% and we have done nothing but normal upkeep. I called the county and they sent the informal review form, it was actually pretty straightforward to fill out. We pulled together our tax bill, a few comps from Realtor.com on streets near us, and some pictures of stuff that needs work. From what I have read, the people who walked in with documentation are getting real reductions. Worth doing in my opinion.

Ours jumped almost double. Going to file the informal review. Worst case they say no, best case it gets adjusted. Diane's reply above lays it out pretty well.

For what it is worth, this is the first time the county has redone assessments in roughly 50 years. A lot of the long-time homes were assessed at values that have not made sense in decades, so the swings are dramatic for some of us and modest for others. The informal review is absolutely worth doing if your number looks off. Bring comparable sales from your neighborhood, photos of any deferred maintenance, and a calm tone. I have heard from several people who got meaningful reductions just by walking in prepared.
